National Forum - India and Hindu interchangeably is not acceptable anymore

This is with reference to Venkitash's reply to anshuman's post.

I do not usually spend time replying to such posts but decided to make an exception as venkitesh's post reveals a total misunderstanding of what constitutes Indian civilisation. Yes, India was and is a plural society, yes, many groups like Parsis and Tebetans found refuge here. But we must be alert to point out that using India and Hindu interchangeably is not acceptable anymore. While in the past we know that Hindu had only a geographic meaning, now - in the colonial and post-colonial era - it is used in several other contexts and has several other meanings. IT is now mainly used as a term for the Vedic religion propagated by Sankara, the Brahmin missionary who walked all over India in the second half of the first millennium, to spread his version of his faith, in a land mass which had Jainism, Buddhism, and any number of indigenous belief systems. It is interesting how Buddhism became almost extinct where it arose, but found deep roots in other Asian societies where it still flourishes in various forms, manily after Shankara succeeded in convincing the local kings about the superiority of his philosophical and political tenets. Jainism survives, but with the loss of most of its basadis, which were turned into "Hindu" temples.

Hence to term the ancient Indian civilisation with rich and ancient pacifist religious traditions (pre-Christian era) of Buddhism, Jainism, and numerous local traditions by the term Hindu is to totally stretch the historical facts wherethey in fact do not go. Actually it is the pacific and egalitarian nature of these indigenous faith systems that is the core of the Indian civilisation, rather than the superimposed Vedic religion (with its divisive hierachies).

While one history of the Salwa Judum places it within the context of a standard counter-insurgency tactic directed against communist guerillas, the version lately preferred by the Maoists and a number of human rights activists is that the Salwa Judum is part of a ï¿½ground clearing exerciseï¿½ for industry and mining.[1] The Dandakaranya region, and Dantewada district in particular, are said to have 18% of Indiaï¿½s iron ore deposits, along with large reserves of graphite ore, limestone, uranium and other minerals. They point to the coincidence that the Chhattisgarh government signed an agreement with both the Tata and Essar groups to invest in steel plants in Bastar and Dantewada on the same day that Salwa Judum started, June 4^th 2005. Both MoUs (memorandum of understanding) were initially kept secret. Both the Tata steel plant at Lohandiguda, for which the company is trying to acquire some 2161 ha, and the Essar Steel plant at Bhansi for which Essar wants 900 ha have been strongly opposed by villagers who will lose their lands to the project. Under PESA 1996, a special law for scheduled areas (areas dominated by indigenous people or adivasis), the government is required to gain the consent of the villagers. In both cases, villages were forced to give their ï¿½consentï¿½ at gunpoint. Both the plants, however, have the support of non-tribal emigrants, who see the prospect of business expanding and their children getting whatever limited jobs come on offer.

While nationwide the anxiety about Maoists is connected to SEZs, the connections in Bastar seem too quickly drawn. Of course, there are links in the person of Mahendra Karma, who leads the Salwa Judum and who is acting as an agent for both Tata and Essar in acquiring land, and in the fact that Essar is funding the permanent resettlement of villages. However, both the large steel plants proposed for this region are in villages where people have not been forcibly evacuated and elsewhere in the country, displacement is taking place without strategic hamletting. Maoist influence had not reached Lohandiguda, and protests against both plants are currently being led not by the Maoists, but by the parliamentary left, the CPI.

The real connections perhaps lie in the silence that now surrounds whatever happens in the region and the atmosphere of impunity that has been created. Now that villages have been emptied, there is a great deal of smaller scale prospecting and felling that goes unchecked. In a government guesthouse on the Andhra side of the border, waiting to cross over to Chhattisgarh, I met a businessman from Andhra Pradesh who had just acquired 3 ha of land for a granite quarry in a village, all of whose inhabitants had been moved to camp. While their permission was required under PESA, they were no longer there to give it. He said he sniffed opportunity at times of conflict, when competition was low - his company had acquired some 100 ha in different villages in small lots and under different names to circumvent the laws requiring federal clearance for forest clearance.

National Forum - Mind the North Delhi Divide

We see everyday people going from North Delhi, North-East Delhi and North-West Delhi to their offices in Noida and Gurgaon (traveling more than 80 kilometers a day). Most of them traveling from office cabs and reaching at their destination in just 2.5 hours, after a daily struggle with traffic jams and after bearing lot of rush, sound and air pollution. Fortunately, the time sometimes reduces to 2 hours but around 4 hours (to and fro) are spoiled in this stressful journey everyday.

Everybody is working extra and stretching the working hours (few companies have made it mandatory to work 9 hours a day and/or 6 days a week) and the long travel time is adding to stress and physical problems. The same way, nowadays drivers are also working extra hours and not taking proper rest causing increase in road accidents.

Lot of job strugglers and people traveling from buses which take around 3 hours one side to reach their respective target locations. Throughout their travel, they need to be alert from pickpockets. Tired and stressed they reach and then face many challenges at work place. No wonder if I salute them, as they have courage and satisfaction that they will reach home after 3 more hours of exhausted journey.

The world famous unbearable summer season of Delhi. On that, non-AC public transport (also most of the multinational company cabs) adds the sweating and stinking discomfort to daily commuters. Obviously, they don't want it but they have to accept it as they have to earn their livelihoods.

They want to live their traditional life and their kids didn't look like that they are going to any school.

And, those tribals are proud of their uneducated life style.

Government socialist assistance should only be given to prevent hunger and every community deserves schools and colleges in their neighbour hood.

Mr. Activists: Please persuade the Naxlites to make demand of schools and colleges and roads every where and the CIVIL society will be with them. Don't make demand for unsustainable subsidy based free-money because that would deplete the primary education budget.

I am not defending anybody here. But, when the government is not being empathetic, what are you doing apart from writing blogs?? What is the use of writing when we can be in hell lot of action improving the place around us.

My friend, I am sure you are more worried about the whole situation than me or a lot of us. But writing such stuff will only cause demotivation among people. Lets create a harmony through this forum and share positive ideas on how, do we in Jhrakhand make it a better place.

This is a fantabulously wrong statement. Most of the mass appeal Hindus swamis are not high caste.

Second Hindus have done for the the disadvantaged (through reservations etc) than any other country for its oppressed. It is through regular reform that the Indian civilization is the longest and only living civilization in the world. All others are dead -- Egyptian, Mesopotamian, Greek etc.

Any talk of equality is fundamentally a myth. Those who usrurped power in the name of equality of hte masses have caused heimous crimes to humanity, the worst in the 20th century in Russia, China, Combodia and other places.

As far as Christianity and Islam is concerned, they carry out genodice of non-believers. Anywhere these religions have gone they have trampled, destroyed and decimated natives and native religions amnd people. Is it surprising that jews, parsees. tibetans all found santuary in India, amidst the Hindus?

There is no second thoughts about it. Hinduism (call it any name you want) is the most inclusive, accomodative and pluralistic system in the world. We are open-minded, we don't care about beliefs of any people. A meat eater and a vegetarian can live side by side peacefully. A believer in formless or full of form god do not go around killing each other in the name of doctrine and what not.

We emphasize harmony and balance. Anybody can have opinions, but facts are sacred. And inspite of tension of the modern world.. we host the maximum number of languages, religions, jatis, colours, cultures in the world.

I challenge anybody to show me any other country which has gone thru 5,000 years of civilization and achieved this.

Dear Katherine,

The concern here is quality of Media coverage of that incident in India. It is normally restricted to a small subtext in a newspaper or a small end of the day newsline in electronic Media.

The obvious double standard concerns you. I remember the kind of Media hue that happened in the aftermath of the Kandhamal riots in specific expression of the Nun's rape case. The way the Media hype was orchestrated turned off genuine sympathisers .

I've spoken to my journalist friends on the coverage . The reply was that, They had orders from the top. - 'We don't want impartial coverage. Just present a particular communities point of view'.

Ya I agree that Even pope has been 'called on the carpet'. But plz see the numbers. Specially in India, Hindu religious leaders are being targeted with a it seems predetermined approach. If it was even then then matter was a different one but every time we see a hindu leader is in the most cases targeted. Even media is playing a double standard it seems.

The only thing that I would like to stress is to spread the message of peace and harmony and try to bring the good things among the public. ï¿½

Tigers are an endangered species in india. In fact the population is dwindling very fast and if no concrete effort is made to end the poaching then the chances of the tiger population surviving the next decade are very bleak.
In 1972, the government formed Project Tiger to protect the tiger forests and

banned shooting any of India's remaining 1,800 tigers. Funds flowed in from all over the world and by 1989 the number of tigers in India had climbed to 4,300. But in 1999, their number came down at around 3,500 and, once again, conservationists were worried. Shooting for recreation is a distant memory from the British Raj, but there are now other, less easily controlled threats to India's big cats. Population growth and rural development such as the construction of mammoth dams in some areas are destroying the natural habitats of tigers. Although trafficking in wildlife products is banned in India, poaching of tigers for their skin, bones and body parts used in Chinese medicine has exacerbated the problem. While Project Tiger has succeeded in protecting about 25 of India's forest reserves, it is among the unprotected areas of forest that are most at risk.
Another factor responsible for the fall in India's tiger population is the rise of insurgency in some parts of the country such as the northeast and Andhra Pradesh in the south. In Andhra Pradesh, Ranjitsingh says, left-wing extremists called Naxalites have provoked villagers to kill tigers because the government was slow to pay villagers for cattle killed by tigers.
            What makes scenario gloomier is the fact that almost 80 per cent of the tiger reserves across the country don't even have a tiger conservation
plan, according to sources. In spite of the attention showered on tigers they continue to be in trouble and till now 95 tigers were killed in 2009. Now it is clear why the tiger is still in trouble.
            Under the Wildlife Protection Act, it is mandatory for all states which have tigers to have a tiger conservation plan, a steering committee headed by the Chief Minister, and a buffer zones around each reserve to save the tigers that stray out of forest. But 80 per cent of tiger reserves across India do not have a tiger conservation plan which is a vital tool for protecting the tiger. Less than 50 per cent of tiger states have a steering committee or a tiger conservation foundation and in the last three years not one state has utilised funds fully released by Centre.
            This is the reason that the current population of wild Bengal tigers in the Indian subcontinent is estimated to be between 1,300 and 1,500. Of these, 1,411 are found in the wild in India while about 280 are found in Bangladesh, mostly in the Sunderbans. As of June 2009, tigers are found in 37 tiger reserves spread across 17 Indian states. An area of special interest lies in North India where 11 protected areas are found in the Terai regions, comprising dry forest foothills and dune valleys at the base of the Himalayans.
            But over the past century tiger numbers have fallen drastically. Of eight sub-species alive in 1900, three are now extinct and we have lost over 90 per cent of wild tigers. Habitat losses and the extremely large-scale incidences of poaching are serious threats to species survival. Poachers kill tigers not only for their pelts, but also for body parts used to make various traditional East Asian medicines. Other factors contributing to their loss are urbanisation and revenge killing. Farmers blame tigers for killing cattle and shoot them. Poachers also kill tigers for their bones and teeth to make medicines that are alleged to impart the tiger's strength to the human who consumes the medicines.
            The fall in number of tigers in the census of 2007 was at last taken seriously by the Government of India. The Finance Minister Mr P Chidambaram allotted a grant of Rs 50 crore for the Protection of Tigers following pressure from international conservationists to save the last tigers of the country. While presenting the budget of 2008-09 Chidambaram told: "The number 1,411 should ring the alarm bells. The tiger is under grave threat." Further Chidambaram said that the National Tiger Conservation Authority would be granted Rs 50 crore to "raise, arm and deploy" a Tiger Protection Force.
            The Project Tiger plans to create eight new Tiger Reserves across the country at a cost of $153 million. An estimated 2,00,000 people from across 250 villages will be relocated as the human interference in tiger territories and encroachment are considered equally dangerous as poaching.
            Here it is worth mentioning that the UP government plans to set up a new tiger reserve in Pilibhit. The new reserve would be spread over an area of approximately 1,000 sq km. It is expected to ease the pressure on the Dudhwa forest reserve that has witnessed a massive depletion of forest cover in recent years, adding to the man-animal conflict in the region. The new tiger reserve would run through Pilibhit, Kishenpur sanctuary and Khutar range of Shahjahanpur. The Dudhwa forest reserve includes Katarniaghat and Kakraha range of Bahraich division. Pilibhit, Khutar and Kakraha are reserved forest areas that will be converted into protected areas for the reserves with a slight alteration in the boundaries. The outline for the reserve, as identified by the Critical Tiger Habitat Committee, was sent to the Central government in January last year. The reserve was sanctioned in last year's budget and forest department has already completed the exercise of delineating its stretch and extent. Now it is to be seen as to when this plan translates into reality.
            Pilibhit is one of the few well forested districts in UP. According to an estimate of year 2004, Pilibhit district has over 800 sq km forests, constituting roughly 23 per cent of the district's total area. Forests in Pilibhit have at least 36 tigers and a good predator base for their survival. Pilibhit forests are part of Terai forests, which together with grasslands constitute habitat for over 127 animal species, 556 bird species and 2,100 types of flowering plants.
They are also home to around six million people who depend on them for their livelihood. With Corbett Tiger Reserve going to Uttrakhand, Uttar Pradesh always wanted to develop Pilibhit forests area as home for the striped cats. A proposal created in 2005 to make a home for the endangered cats in Pilibhit forests was sent to the government of India in April 2008, on the basis of the potential to have special type of ecosystem with vast open spaces and sufficient feed for the elegant predators. The reserve has a core area of 1089 km (proposed) and buffer area of 627 km (proposed). The northern edge of the reserve lies along the Indo-Nepal border while the southern boundary is marked by the river Sharada and Khakra. It is home to a large number of rare and endangered species, which include tiger, leopard, swamp deer, hispid hare, Bengal floricans, etc.
            This new reserve would run through Pilibhit, Kishenpur sanctuary and Khutar range of Shahjahanpur, the existing one would have Dudhwa, Katarniaghat and Kakraha range of Bahraich division. Pilibhit, Khutar and Kakraha are reserved forest areas which will be converted into protected areas for the reserves. Actually, Dudhwa tigers are distributed in one major and three smaller populations. Major population is constituted by Dudhwa reserve which includes Dudhwa National Park, Kishenpur and Katarniaghat wildlife sanctuaries and forests of Pilibhit, north and south Kheri. The smaller tiger populations are present in Bijnor forests in west, and Suhelwa and Sohagibarwa wildlife sanctuaries in east.
            According to a study by Wildlife Institute of India (WII), Dudhwa-Pilibhit population has high conservation value since it represents the only tiger population having the ecological and behavioural adaptations of the tiger unique to the Terai region. But this rosy scenario may turn dismal, given the fact that the Pilibhit Tiger Reserve project was granted in the month of September 2008, when Government of India approved the area for its inhabitants in the Pilibhit district of Uttar Pradesh. But due to the state government's indifference towards the project, the work on the proceedings of the implementation of the project is moving at a snail's pace. What is more, even after an amendment in the Wildlife (Protection) Act that makes formal notification of tiger reserves mandatory, sources reveal that UP is yet to notify its tiger reserves.
            A 2006 Amendment in the Wildlife (Protection) Act said tiger reserves should be notified with a demarcation of a critical (core) area, to serve as an inviolate tiger habitat, and a buffer area which would help in creating contiguous tiger habitats. Yet, Uttar Pradesh has not made any formal area demarcations yet. Making a formal notification would mean the tiger reserve would get increased funding for patrolling and development under various heads from the Central National Tiger Conservation Authority. In Dudhwa and Pilibhit, tigers have been reeling under man-animal conflict and poaching. In Dudhwa, tigers have been getting killed on a railway line that runs through the park.

"Despite all our pressures, UP has not notified the core areas of the tiger reserves. While verbal commitments have been made, no formal notification has been made," says Rajesh Gopal, member secretary, NTCA. In UP especial intervention is required, as UP has always had a good tiger population. Furthermore, Pilibhit is an extremely vulnerable area to poaching.

How foolish secularists are helping build Brand Modi

Recent media coverage of Narendra Modi's interrogation by the Special
Investigation Team (SIT)and the Amitabh Bachchan controversy constitute
further evidence of the emptiness of Indian secularism. By gloating over
the simple fact that Modi was called by the SIT for questioning, and
then fulminating over his non-appearance on March 21, the secularists
have proved that what they care about is not justice, but their own
vanity. India's humbug secularists have personalised the definition of
secularism for narrow political ends.

It corresponds to no dictionary meaning of the word. Secularism is
defined as the opposite of what the Sangh parivar stands for. Like
Pakistan defining itself as "not India," secularists define themselves
as "not the Sangh parivar". The Sangh is the unspeakable "other", the
demon they are trying to exorcise in themselves. And in Modi they have
found the perfect personification of all that they hate in themselves.

Modi has often been accused - and legitimately - of equating his
state's interests with his own. But his detractors are playing into his
hands. When Amitabh Bachchan is asked to be the state's brand ambassador
for tourism, he is pilloried for his impertinence. Modi may have had his
own agenda in inviting him to promote Gujarat's cause, but isn't that
what politicians do anyway? Why is anyone who promotes Gujarat an
instant target for secularists? This is ideological tyranny.

If Modi is wrapping himself in the state's colours, the secularists are
helping him do so through sheer stupidity. By blasting anyone who is
hired by the state, they are effectively saying that working for Gujarat
is the same as working for Modi. So when Modi says the secularists are
trampling on Gujarati asmita, it is entirelybelievable.

Blind hatred cannot lead to any good. Before the Gujarat elections in
2007, Jairam Ramesh made out a case suggesting that the state's economic
success under Modi was less due to him than the Gujarati's business
instincts - which may be partly true. But this no different from saying
that the UPA's economic performance is due to India's demographic bulge
driven by George Bush's global growth engine -which was equally the
case. Being a supporter of dynasty, Ramesh, of course, won't have the
guts to acknowledge this. But Modi's achievements are worth sullying.

It is also sickening to see secularists salivating at the prospect of
Modi's humiliation - when justice is the priority. No one noted that
Rajiv Gandhi was never called to answer questions on Bofors when it was
more than clear that he and his nominees were the unstated suspects. The
Swedish prosecutor in the Bofors case expressed surprise why Sonia
Gandhi was not quizzed in the scam - when she is also the obvious link
to Ottavio Quattrochi. Is it any surprise that Quattrochi gets a quiet
exit during the UPA regime?

Much is also being made of the fact that the Congress expressed regrets
for the anti-Sikh riots of 1984 while Modi has kept mum. Ask yourself:
is the apology of a Sikh prime minister for his party's anti-Sikh pogrom
really worth taking at face value? Not that apologies make any
difference. LKAdvani's belated "saddest day of my life" apology was not
good enough for the secularists to forgive him for the Babri demolition,
but Manmohan Singh's apology 20 years after 1984 is a wonderful example
of contrition!

As for the Bachchan episode, he has no chance of being excused by the
secular cabal. In fact, he is doubly guilty. His first crime was, of
course, related to the fact that he had the temerity to bat for Gujarat.
His second crime was that he had fallen foul of the Gandhi family.
Combine the two, and he had no chance of being left alone. This is why
Congress party buffoons are busy demanding all kinds of explanations
from him when Ratan Tata, Mukesh Ambani and Anil Ambani -all businessmen
who showered praise on Modi directly - got away unnoticed, as Amitabh
pointed out in his blogs.

It is not anybody's case that Modi should not be punished or tried for
whatever he did or didn't do in 2002. But we have already tried him in
the media and convicted him. Even assuming this is poetic justice for a
man who let unspeakable things happen in his state eight years ago, it
is no excuse for one-sided secularism.

In Hans Christian Andersen's immortal tale, it took the innocence of a
child to tell the emperor that he was wearing no clothes. The emperor's
tailors had told him that the invisible clothes they had made for him
would not be seen by anyone who was "just hopelessly stupid." Since the
emperor did not want to be labelled stupid, he pretended to wear the
clothes when he was really walking stark naked.

It seems our secularists are also running stark naked - and they don't
seem to know it.

I am assuming that the videos were not doctored at this moment, which most of you also belive.

Similarly, if you have watched the videos, Did you notice only the Sex part or you also had seen the mutual expression of love and Ranjitha's service mentality, where she is seen as giving medicines and then massaging Swamiji's legs. The atmosphere of that room seemed so perfect for love between two consenting adults, that would leave many husbands jealous.

Please do a test if possible (I mean no offense to any one)

Next time, please request your wife to massage your feet and see her reaction. I believe, there will be more bad news and some may end up in Hospital.

Many of you designate this as sex or lust and don't see the love and Samarpana by Ranjitha (total surrender). Love between Radha-Krishna, which most Abharamic religion people/schalars won't understand.

Since Swami Nityanada is a Guru, most of you think that his actions in the video were unbecoming of a Guru and he never had any right to love,desire.

I have never seen that he claimed himself as a god and a human being can only try to get rid of the   five Vikaras (impediments) - Kama, Krodha, Lobha, Moha and Ahankara; he may fail in controlling these Vikaras at some point of time. Many already did;there are precedences.

A possibility

Swamiji might have control over these five Vikaras at one point of time but when he saw Ranjitha at first time, could have lost control over the Vikara 'Kama'. Brahmarshi Viswamitra also had gone through similar situation after seeing Menka and his Shishya's didn't have any issues;they had not abandoned him and went to another Guru. Another possibility by Shri Rajiv Malhotra is he could be experimenting Tantra for further teaching.

Of course, in those days, When Vishwamitra desired Menka, there were no Secular media, Muslims, Christians and Nastik (non-believers) and most important - Secular people. Most of us are so modernized that, we see our ancient Sanatana Dharma as a burden and see a Mutual Love and surrender as a Sex Scandal.

Please take a look at the dictionary meanings of lust/sex and compare it with the ancient Sanskrit meaning of 'Kama'. After seeing Apsara Menka, Brahmarshi Vishwamitra felt something in his heart for first time in his hermit career - 'Kama' - it was not only the desire for a sex or lust. It was Kama.

Similarly, whenever Kamdeva (god of love) was given the task to ignite love/desire of love for Parvati, in Mahadeva's heart - he was not giving him a Viagra warhead in his Kama-arrow. He was inducing love and desire of love.

Swami Nityananda did lot of Sadhana to study the ancient Hindu religious scriptures (which we don't do). He is a great religious teacher and has got millions of followers.

Most of you thought or perceived in your mind that he has control over five Vikaras (impediments) - Kama, Krodha, Lobha, Moha and Ahankara.

And now, when he has lost control over Vikara Kama (if the videos are not doctored) , after several years of teaching, most of you love to demonize him. He becomes fake - are his teachings also fake ? Can you attempt to teach like him and see, how far you can go. He has got a gifted talent to teach and show us a way of better living in proximity with god. Now all the secular media is mocking him as if his 'Kama' == Viagra kind of sex against the consent of Ranjitha.

And the pity this is - most of us believe this nonsense interpretation of secular media without looking at the above aspects.

Well.. This is my own analysis based on a worst case scenario - if the videos are not doctored. Losing control over Kama and mutual love is not a crime. Think of Ravana - who kidnapped Sita against her will and draw an analogy.

It is the forced or motivatedï¿½ vow of celebacy as a virtue that leads many ofï¿½ its practitioners into unnatural living. and sex-starved behaviour.I really pity these fellows and their mentors. All the Gods of Hindu Trinity are married and almost all the saints and sages are married people leading disciplined sexual lives. And Lord Shiva, himself a Mahayogi and Father of yogic science, is twice married.I totally agree with Ram Punyani's analysis .I have elaborated this in my recent article 'Bhanda Babanka Bhola Chela' in my Bikalpa Biswa column in Sambad on 24th of this month. Of cource there are honourable exceptions wherein people genuinely inspired by higher life goals do not want to be shackled with burden of marriage.Their number is few and far between.

Many a sex scandals related to Holy men have come to surface during last few weeks (March 2010). Its not that these are the first oneï¿½s to have been brought to social attention, such incidents have been coming to social notice time and over again. The present onesï¿½ about Swami Nityanand and Ichhchadhari Baba (Bhimanand) have highlighted the same in a very intense fashion as these scandals are very blatant.

One recalls in recent history many such cases have startled the media and society, the allegation of a foreign writer about Satya Sai Baba, then allegations against Gurmeet Ram Rahim, Santosh Madhavan, happenings of the Kamkoti Peetham Shakarachrya are quite well known. From other religious traditions, one recalls the recent book by Sister Jesme (Story of a Nun) and the news that the Roman Catholic Church has sacked a priest accused of pedophilia as large number of complaints were coming forth in Germany from people who were abused as children. At another level the RSS pracharak (RSS pracharaks are to remain bachelors for political reasons) Sanjay Joshi had also to give up his political responsibility when a CD related to his sexual exploits came to surface.

In all these cases the underlying mechanisms are different. In Catholic establishment, to remain unmarried is the norm and many cases have come to light, which have shamed the establishment. The Hindu God-men are all ï¿½stand aloneï¿½ systems, not an organized Church. While comparing these may not be easy, what is common in these is that the organizations where members remain celibate to discharge their religiously or politically ordained duties, many of them do get tainted by the fall out of such acts.

What is different about the case of these God-men in particular is a deliberate misuse of their ï¿½spiritual attainmentsï¿½ to indulge in carnal pleasures, under the guise of spirituality, to the extent of running sex rackets in association with those in power. Here is the case of gross abuse of faith to the extent of deliberately setting up a situation to exploit the women devotees. The methods used by the swamis are diverse. This should come under a serious crime not only at legal but also at social level to ensure that such gross abuse of faith is brought under serious scanner.

As such the concept of celibacy in many a religious orders had a spiritual base in the noble idea of renunciations and transcending of the physical pleasures to attain the higher spiritual platform. The religious Gurus have been of different types as for as celibacy is concerned. In early India there were renouncers as well as those who led a family life. Patanjali stated ï¿½swa-ang jugupsa, parai asansargahï¿½, meaning that with increasing spiritual insights, with mind achieving higher truth, apathy for physical body comes in. This is what is supposed to have made celibacy the path to sanyas. Celibacy, Brahmcharya has been highly respectable in sections of society.

After 8^th century celibacy was taken to exalted levels into Hindu tradition by Shankara, while he was leading the battle of Hinduism against Buddhism. To attack Buddhism he adopted various concepts from Buddhism itself, e.g. the concept of renunciation of material wants, celibacy included. Today the idea of celibacy is prevalent mainly in Buddhism, sects of Hinduism and amongst Catholic priests. These three have base in religious traditions. For much different reasons, mainly political oneï¿½s, organization like RSS has also brought this in for its propagators.

Patanjaliï¿½s argument is repeated by modern God-man, Sri Sri Ravishaker. According to him as you go to higher levels, body becomes insignificant and interest in sex is reduced to nothing. There have been dissenting note from within the stable of God-men itself. The major such voice was that of Osho, Bhagwan Rajneesh. He argued that sex could be transcended only through experience; this was what he preached and penned down in his book, Sambhog se Samadhi (From Sex to Superconciousness) .ï¿½ï¿½

ï¿½

These semi philosophical outpourings apart, the biological compulsions have always accompanied the celibates and the scandals have kept popping out from such institutions and individuals, telling us that these sexual escapades are a rule than an exception. It may be in the form of child abuse, same sex relationships to downright cunning methods indulged by God-men to trap the women on the pretext of their ï¿½spiritualï¿½ pursuits. Different philosophical sounding arguments are dished out to the unsuspecting laity. ï¿½

From last few decades these incidents are coming more to the surface as the phenomenon of God-men has mushroomed all around. This phenomenon is an accompaniment of the existential anxieties of the globalized world, the razor edge competitive era, where cut throat competition at work place, heightened consumerism and moving upward in the scale of financial earning is the only index of oneï¿½s success. The need for emotional succor is leading to the rise of the industry of God-men.

The God-men, belong to many categories, each having his-her own entrepreneurial skills. God-men put out their brand of spirituality, which apparently gives solace to the aggrieved middle and lower middle classes in particular amongst others. God-men have set up institutions which cater to vastly expanding market. Meera Nanda in her book, the ï¿½God Marketï¿½ argues that there is an increased religiosity, collusion with the corporate World and the state. In India in particular, a subtle Hindusization is going on as such and this has been aided by the private sector. There is an active promotion of religious tourism. Higher education has been handed over to private sector, some of whom use religious trusts to run these institutions to impart ï¿½value educationï¿½. State has been generous in giving away land at highly subsidized rates to the Gurus and God-men.

One can also see the rise of religious Right here and in different countries during this period. RSS is having a field day in culturally Hinduizing the social space, and God-men are the major players in the game. One can say that these swamis of the ilk of Nityanad and Ichchhadhari are just the visible part of a larger phenomenon. These two cases also show the range of activities, from the spiritual faï¿½ade to downright sex racket.

The broader picture of the phenomenon is much more disturbing. Last three decades have been one of the most tragic periods of human history for different reasons. It is this period when the global political and social phenomenon has adopted the language of the religion. This language has created multiple problems. On one hand, one major religious community has been demonized, and on the other there is a big set back to the rational thinking and progressive values. When the language of religion is used with great aplomb, the reason is forced on the back-foot and the suppression of human rights takes the garb of religion. Since religion is accompanied by faith, which in turn can create hysteria, the latter ensures that blind religiosity and blind faith rule the roost. The beneficiaries of these arrangements are the entrenched social, economic powers.

Globally, US took on Russian forces by promoting the conservative versions of Islam, used the religious language to train Al Qaeda, and laced its ambitions for oil in the language of religion. Here in India those who were opposed to social transformation of caste and gender, used Ram Temple type issues, created mass hysteria around identity issues and have tried to push back the process of social transformation. The increased social presence of God-men is an accompaniment of this process. They have duel function. On one hand they aid in creating conservative values, refurbished caste and gender norms from Manusmiriti are propagated, and on the other they exploit this situation for their material enhancement, sexual exploitation included. Interestingly the God men who talk of renunciation and going to higher levels themselves are the biggest beneficiaries of material riches. Society has to learn the lessons from the sprawling wealth and sexual exploitation done by section of God-men and to understand as to what is really taking place in the garb of holy clothes is a mere misuse of faith for crass purposes. Nityanand and Icchadhari Baba is a sort of barometer of the phenomenon which has gripped our society. ï¿½

Jharkhand Govt discriminating the poorest of the poor

-          out of the 34 lakh BPL families, only 23 lakh families are provided some relief, leaving the remaining 11 lakh families to die of starvation & disease –

When you are not serious about doing what should be done, then appoint a Commission !   This is what the Indian govt (both at the centre and the states} is most adept at. Every ministry goes about appointing commission after another. They are given stipulated time within which to submit the report. Most often the commissions do not finish their work in time and ask for extensions which are also liberally given. And finally when the report is given, it is given a quiet burial. The only beneficiaries are the members of the commission (often retired judges & bureaucrats) and the assisting staff who get paid handsomely.

However, one must add some of the commissions do a proficient job and their findings & recommendations are worth implementing. Three such commissions were recently set up by the central govt & the supreme court:

The Arjun Sen Gupta Commission appointed by the central govt to find out the extent of poverty in the country. It submitted its report to the PM in 2006. It came out with the startling revelation that 77% ( 83.6 crore) of Indians lived on less than Rs. 20 per day. If the parameters are applied to Jharkhand, as much as 90% of the state's population would come under Rs. 20 per day. It was such a severe shock treatment to the ruling class and to the complacent economists that it was neatly put into cold storage and no one in govt circles speaks of it any more.

The Tendulkar Commission was appointed by the Planning Commission with the same task of assessing the extent of poverty. It was done with the hope that this commission would come out with some thing more consoling than the previous commission's findings. This commission submitted its report in 2009. The major finding was that 38% of Indians fall in BPL category, whereas the Planning Commission had been asserting that only 28% Indians are BPL. There was thus a 10 % difference between the govt and the commission assessment.

This commission also studied the BPL situation in the different states of the country. Jharkhand has 51% of its population in BPL category. This again was not pleasing to people in the corridors of power because it would mean the Planning Commission would have to increase it allocation to this additional 10%.

The Wadhwa Commission was appointed by the Supreme Court. It submitted its report to the Scheduled Castes just a few weeks ago. It contains startling information about the functioning of the Public Distribution system (PDS): Entire PDS has collapsed, says SC panel

Many other issues are -

        80% of domestic electricity consumed by 5% rich.

        50% of PDS Kerosene, LPG, Foods diverted to retail.

        50% of Potash and 30% of Urea Diverted to Industries.

        Private hospitals generate 85% of health care business.

        70% of education in private control.

        Rs. 5,00,000 crores Tax Dodges to Corporate.

        75% of bank credit to 1% population.

        80% of imported goods serve 5% population.

        Farmers get 20% to 50% of retail value.

        Traders Hoard & Control entire food chain.

*     PDS system in Jharkhand is a glaring example of what the system ought not to         be !

The Wadhwa Commission, taking into consideration the gravity of the situation faced by the poor masses in the country, makes a significant recommendation to the SC, namely, all those earning less than Rs. 100 a day should be put in the BPL category.

Now, the big question is 'where do the poor Jharkhandi masses stand?'

Of the three Commissions, the Arjun Sengupta Commission (with its assessment of 77% of Indians living on less than Rs. 20 a day) and the Wadhwa Commission (with its recommendation that all those earning less than Rs. 100 a day should be put in the BPL category) will prove absolutely devastating if they are applied to Jharkhand. At least about 90% of Jharkhandis will come under BPL. Neither the central or state govt would be willing to admit such a reality.

A more moderate assessment by the Tendulkar Commission (51% of Jharkhandis are BPL) can be taken as the minimal assessment for Jharkhand govt to act on.

Total population of Jharkhand :    2,70,00,000 persons (67,50,000 families with 4 members

Tendulkar's assessment of 51% BPL: No of families                                         34,42,500

Jharkhand govt's relief to BPL families: Antyodaya Ann Yoljna: 8,17,900 families

                                     Mukh Mantri Khadanya Suraksha Yojna: 14,76,100 families

Balance BPL: unattended by govt: No of families                                           10,48,500



The problem with Jharkhand govt is that it does not know exactly how many BPL families there are in the state. Nor has it worked out the criteria for ascertaining as to who would qualify to be considered BPL.

The hard fact is that poverty is deepening in rural Jharkhand. What they are able to realize from their agricultural production may last for at most five to six months, and after that they become casual labourers or migrate to far away states.

In such a situation of increasing poverty, hunger, disease among the majority of the state population, the state govt has declared a war on this very people in the name of 'Operation Green Hunt' instead of meaningfully attending to their life-and-death issues. Tragic situation indeed.

It is really disgraceful that even after 63 years of Independence of India, the basic essentials of modern life and amenities have not reached the poor and deprived and in particular tribal of the country. this is more so in the field of health, infant and maternity care resulting in high rate of infant and maternal mortality. I would like to site an example of my native village in the district of Godda in Jharkhand. I have written to the governor of Jhrarkhand, Prime minister of India and Mrs. Sonia Gandhi during Presidential rule in the state without any consequence.During my present visit to Ranchi I have have presented the problem personally to CM and the Health Minister and am anxiously waiting for some action.For details please read the attached.

Over two-and-a-half million people worldwide, half of them in the US, are using word processors, creating slide-shows and doing their sums with the help from an online suite of software products built by Chennai-based technology start-up Zoho. In Bangalore, InMobi ï¿½ a company that builds technology for mobile internet advertising ï¿½ is helping global advertisers and publishers reach 175 million customers every month across Asia, Africa, the UK and the US.

In Kolkata, FusionCharts, a graphic data visualisation tool created by start-up Infosoft Global, is used by 1,500 organisations across the globe, including the US government. Across India, a slew of such start-up companies are creating and selling proprietary products as they script a new saga in the countryï¿½s technology industry.

Software products are designed to be used by multiple customers, either businesses or consumers. They typically carry intellectual property that creates higher value compared to software services for a limited clientele that forms the bulk of Indiaï¿½s $ 50-billion software industry.

ï¿½

So, while it took Infosys Technologies 18 years to record its first $100 million in revenue, product start-ups such as InMobi expect to do so within five years. ï¿½In the next 18 months we will have revenues of $100 million,ï¿½ said Naveen Tewari, CEO and founder, InMobi. The company, which was set up in 2007, has already built a direct sales force in seven cities across the world.

It is this ability to scale into very large companies quickly that is making the technology product space attractive to both entrepreneurs and investors. ï¿½Of the 11 investments we have made since 2007, seven are in technology product companies,ï¿½ said Sudhir Sethi, founder & CMD, IDG Ventures India, which has backed software product companies such as Perfint Healthcare, a medical devices start-up, and Apalya Technologies, which streams live television to mobile phones. Another IDG Ventures investee company, 3D Solid Compression, builds three-dimensional visualisation tools that can also be used on mobile phones.

ï¿½In the next five years, $3-5 billion of private equity and venture capital will be invested in start-ups building technology products out of India,ï¿½ said Mr Sethi. Technology entrepreneurs are riding on a host of advantages that the Indian market offers for product companies. These include the availability of technically-trained people and the low cost of selling technology products online.

Zohoï¿½s revenues of $50 million come from selling its suite of software that offers 21 applications to customers on the net. ï¿½We will have 20 million users over the next few years as online application suites overtake and become more powerful than desktop-based applications,ï¿½ said Sridhar Vembu, founder & chief executive officer of Zoho, which competes with Microsoft and Google.

The ability to test products in the domestic market, especially in areas such as mobile telephony and medical devices, has also worked well for start-ups such as Mumbai-based Webaroo Technologies and Perfint Healthcare. Webarooï¿½s SMSGupShup, a Twitter-like closed group messaging product for cellphone subscribers, has 27 million users in India. In three months, GupShup will be available to mobile users in nearly two dozen countries. By the end of 2010, Webaroo expects the launch of pay-to-use services such as email-like-SMS products and the global rollout to help it generate $10 million in revenues from $3 million now, said chief executive Beerud Sheth.

BHUBANESWAR: A citizens' committee that visited Kalinganagar industrial hub in Jajpur district of Orissa hours after the police action against the tribals opposing construction of a common corridor road on Tuesday demanded that the work on the controversial road be stopped immediately.

Addressing presspersons here on Wednesday, three of the five-member concerned citizens' committee said that the police action against the tribals was in violation of all democratic norms.

They said about 40 tribal men and women sustained bullet injuries in the ï¿½indiscriminate police firing' against peaceful protestors of Bisthapan Birodhi Janamanch, the organisation spearheading an anti-displacement agitation against a steel plant project of Tata Steel and the common corridor road.

ï¿½The administration does not seem to be sensitive to the cause of the tribal protestors as much as it is concerned for the companies in Kalinganagar,ï¿½ they said in their report.

The concerned citizens' committee, which was led by former High Court Judge Justice Chaudhury Pratap Mishra, had Rabi Das, Chita Mohanty, Sudhir Pattnaik and Mahendra Parida as members.

ï¿½The police firing at the site of the controversial common corridor road near Baligotha village was unwarranted and uncalled for and therefore looks to be pre-planned,ï¿½ the committee said.

ï¿½The presence of 29 platoons of armed police, two platoons of NSG, 70 police officers and seven Magistrates in the area does speak about the atmosphere of police terror prevailing in the area,ï¿½ the committee observed.

Justice Mishra demanded that Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik intervene in the matter and halt the road project without delay.

He also condemned the Jajpur administration for not allowing media persons to visit the place of police firing and the villages that were attacked by police and some civilians who were allegedly in police uniform.

The administration had made no efforts to treat the injured persons who were scared to go out of their villages for fear of torture and arrest, Justice Mishra said. About 25 injured persons were provided treatment by a doctor who accompanied the committee members.

Entry denied

Meanwhile, leaders of opposition parties such as Congress, Bharatiya Janata Party and Communist Party of India (Marxist), who went to visit the police firing site on Wednesday were denied entry into the area by the local administration. The administration, however, continued the road construction work by deploying a large number of policemen in the area.

BJP State president Jual Oram in a release said "I strongly condemn the oppressive force used by the State Government at Kalinga Nagar. I demand the problems should be resolved by discussion with tribal people. Before displacing them proper rehabilitation and compensation have to be made to their satisfaction. However, I am sending a BJP delegation led by former MLA Sanchita Mohanty, former MLA and State vice-president to assess the ground level situation at Kalinga Nagar." The delegation comprises former MP Archana Nayak and State vice-president Karendra Majhi, Simantini Jena and Jagannath Samal.

Pradesh Congress Committee president KP Singh Deo said it is really unfortunate that the construction of the road project is being carried out forcefully on the land of tribals by the police, resorting to lathi charge, firing bullets and tear gas shells. The State Government is resorting to firing repeatedly on the tribals in Kalinga Nagar. In this connection he has sent a fax to the party leader Sonia Gandhi and apparaised her of the situation. In another statement former Chief Minister Giridhari Gamang said if the police excess against the tribals is not stopped, the adivasis would fight unitedly against the Odisha Government's oppression. Congress vice-president Shibananda Ray said the incident proves that the Naveen Government has no sympathy for the tribals.

MP and AICC secretary Ramachandra Khuntia condemning the incident has demanded an high-level inquiry into the incident.

BHUBANESWAR: Concerned Citizens Committee (CCC), a forum of civil society leaders, on Wednesday accused police of ï¿½brutal useï¿½ of force to evict tribals from their lands at Kalinga Nagar in Jajpur district.

ï¿½At least 30-40 tribals have sustained serious bullet injuries in police firing on Tuesday. Four of them are critical and battling for life in hospital. The district administration says only rubber bullets were fired at the crowd to prevent them from attacking the police. But the bloody wounds do not prove to be handyï¿½workï¿½of only rubber bullets,ï¿½ Justice Choudhury Pratap Mishra, head of the forum, said at a crowded press conference here.ï¿½

A retired high court judge, Justice Mishra headed a four-member team that visited Kalinga Nagar on Tuesday afternoon soon after the police resorted to lathicharge and lobbed teargas cells at the tribals, besides firing rubber bullets.ï¿½

Kalinga Nagar is in boil since past few days as the district administration is hell bent on construction of a common corridor to facilitate rail and road links to the Kalinga Nagar industrial complex where more than one and half a dozen steel industries are coming up.ï¿½

The tribals are demanding land for land and adequate financialï¿½compensationfor displacement.ï¿½

The anti-displacement forum, Visthapan Virodhi Jana Manch [VVJM] secretary Rabindra Jarika said on Wednesday that the tribals were betrayed as the government ï¿½ instead of sticking to its promise to continue dialogue ï¿½ used force to acquire the land.ï¿½

At least 40 frontline leaders of the VVJM have been put behind bars recently on charges of instigating violence and attacking police.ï¿½

The area has virtually turned into a battle field with 29 platoons of armed police forces, two platoons of NSG commandoes and 70 topï¿½policeï¿½officersï¿½being deployed their to facilitate land acquisition.ï¿½

ï¿½The administration has trampled our human rights. We can no more continue our protest in the face of brutal use of force. We would rather commit mass suicide,ï¿½ VVJM secretary Mr Jarika said.ï¿½

The CCC, while seeking immediate intervention of the chief minister Naveen Patnaik, urged him to order immediately halt to the police action in Kalinga Nagar. Besides, it demanded Rs 1 lakh compensation for each injured individual.ï¿½

Report by Dipti Ranjan Kanungo; Bhubaneswar: A citizensï¿½ committee which visited Baligootha Kalinga Nagar under the leadership of Justice Chaudhry Pratap Mishra (Retd Judge of Orissa High Court) on 30th March, 2010 after indiscriminate firing against peaceful protesters of Vistapan Virodhi Janmanch was reported in the media, has come across shocking incidences of police and mafia brutality.ï¿½

The members of the committee which also included Sri Rabi Das, Shri Chitta Mohanty, Sri Sudhir Pattnaik, Sri Mahendra Parida met the victims of bullet injury in Baligootha, Chandia and Baragadia and saw the damages done to the houses, bovine wealth, food grains, food articles, motor bikes and cycles of the villagers.ï¿½

The Sarpanch of Baligootha reported before the committee that his cash and golden chain also have been stolen from his house apart from the damage caused to food grains. Dabur Kalundia another leader also deposed before the team. Rabi Jarika the leader of the agitating tribals who had sustained bullet injury also narrated the whole incidence of the day and the politics behind the common corridor. The committee met men, women and children andï¿½ about 25 injured persons received treatment from the senior doctor who accompanied the committee along with a team of volunteers.

Observations of the Committee

1.About 30-40 tribals have sustained bullet injuries in the firing and 25 were treated by the Doctor accompanying the committee. 4 critically injured persons were in the hospital. Some have bullets stuck within their wounds. Though it appears to be rubber bullets but the kind of bloody wounds each one of the persons treated has received does not seem to be the work of only rubber bullets.

2.No efforts by the administration to treat the injured. People donï¿½t wish to go out for treatment for fear of torture and arrest.

3.The police firing at the site of the controversial common corridor road near Baligootha was unwarranted and uncalled for and therefore looks to be preplanned.

4.29 platoons of armed police, 2 platoons of NSG, 70 police officers and 7 magistrates does speak a lot about the firing andï¿½ also speaks about the atmosphere of police terror prevailing in the area.

5. The witnesses report, familiar faces in the nearby localities close to the ruling party who came in police uniform and attacked all houses in Baligootha. They did not carry guns. They had swords and other deadly weapons in their hand.

6. The place in which 144 was declared could see civilian goons in the presence of police as reported by the people.

7. The houses of leaders of the Manch have been damaged and all important articles including food grains burnt.

8. Agitating and aggrieved tribals spending sleepless nights under tree in the fear of more attacks since the police, goons of the company and certain criminal elements associated with the ruling party are having a field day with good cooperation of the administration and police.

9. The presence of such a huge force itself threatens the peace of the area.

10. The administration does not seem to be sensitive to the cause of the tribal protesters as much it is concerned for the companies in kalinganagar.

Recomendations

1.ï¿½ï¿½ï¿½ The Honble Chief Minister should immediately intervene and call immediate halt to the controversial common corridor project

2.ï¿½ï¿½ï¿½ Since the administration has betrayed the people once more a dialooogueee should take place at the highest level with the CM on the demands of the tribals including the one calling for land for land. Even people owning land in the common corridor have not been consulted.

3.ï¿½ï¿½ï¿½ Instead of building police stations one after another in a small place with corporate funding the CM should ensure that every villages gets developmental inputs particularly education, health, water, social security schemes such as widow pensions all of which have been suspended arbitrarily.

4.ï¿½ï¿½ï¿½ Law should not be taken to hands by any citizens and this law applies first to the police administration. All officers civil and police must be suspended immediately and be subjected to trial

5.ï¿½ï¿½ï¿½ Financial compensation to the tune of Rs 1 lakh for every person injured in the firing be given to the victims .

Bhubaneswar, March 31:ï¿½A citizensï¿½ committee led by a retired high court judge today sought the chief ministerï¿½s intervention and immediate halt to the controversial common corridor project in Kalinga Nagar and stringent action for police brutality on the tribal protesters.

Justice Chaudhury Pratap Mishra and other members of the citizensï¿½ committee said they had met the victims of police brutality and saw extensive damages caused to their house and other property during their visit to Kalinga Nagar yesterday.

Yesterday, there was a clash between police and the tribal protesters, who opposed construction of the common corridor project.

While the tribal protesters had pelted stones on the police, the latter used rubber bullets and teargas shells to disperse the mob.

The citizensï¿½ committee, however, claimed that about 30 to 40 tribals had sustained bullet injuries in the police action. Of them, 25 people were treated by the doctor accompanied by the committee, while four critically injured persons were admitted in the hospital.

ï¿½There has been no effort by the administration to treat the injured. People donï¿½t wish to go out for treatment for fear of torture and arrest,ï¿½ said Justice Mishra.

Stop the Corporate Terror Against the Adivasis of Kalingnagar

ï¿½

Yesterday (31^st March, 2010) in Kalinga Nagar industrial complex in Orissa's Jajpur district heavily armed para-military force brutally attacked the adivasis who are resisting the construction of 7.5 km road, being constructed for Tataï¿½s (the biggest Indian industrial house) upcoming project.

ï¿½

The adivasi villages have been razed and houses demolished. In Balligotha village firing on adivasis took place injuring about 15 persons. One of them who is seriously injured has been whisked away by the police. This brutal attack is organized after days of preparation in order to put down the resistance of adivasis against Tataï¿½s project which will displace thousands of families. About 25 platoons of police and paramilitary forces have been deployed and the district administration has started construction in Kalinga Nagar industrial area of Common Corridor Road (CCR).

ï¿½

The state government has been falsely claiming that the land it wants to acquire is wasteland, while the reality is something diametrically different. This area that has been called as the core zone consists of green hills with rich forests, tribal settlements of more than ten thousand people spread over two gram panchayats, agricultural lands, ancient tanks, grazing fields, village common lands and roads. Twenty per cent of the Project area has quality forest where timber species like Sal, Kuruma, Vandan, Ashan and Piasal, besides Mahula, Kendu are plentily available. The total area of waste land is less than 5 acres on the Northern side.

The Orissa government till date has signed nearly 40 MoUs with various industrial houses and groups to set up their plants in Orissa out of which 13 plants are planned in Kalinga Nagar of Jajpur district The government has been equally brutal against the tribal communities gathered at Maikanch and Kashipur in protest against Utkal Alumina Project, whereby three tribals were killed in Maikanch in the recent past.ï¿½The government has come out openly as the hireling of the exploitative capitalists, at the expense of the poor and the voiceless. It has been brazenly trampling upon the basic right of livelihood of the local population with impunity

ï¿½

This is not the first time in Kaling Nagar that the state and its armed forces have proved to be so brazenly vindictive, aligning with the industrialists at the cost of local communities. ï¿½In the past also it has used its force to silence the resistance of the poor. Four years ago ï¿½in police firing 14 tribals, including three women, were murdered, on January 2, 2006 while opposing forcible land acquisition by the Tata Steel for its proposed steel project in the area. The same saga is being repeated today.

We severely condemn this barbarous attack on adivasis by the police and para-military forces who are acting as a hired mercenary of Tata Steel company and demand that it should immediately stop the construction work of the Common Corridor Road project as it will be built on fertile farm land and the community land of the tribals who are the real owner of this land.

We appeal to all the organizations and concerned citizens to raise their voice against the Fascist predatory tendencies of the Govt and express solidarity with the belligerent tribals of Kalinga Nagar.

Whether you like it or not. Indian history is Hindu history, not hinduised history. Hindus and Indians have been synonymous for thousands of years. Christianity and Islam are recent entrants.

Ancient Pagans

*As soon as Christianity was legal (315), more and more pagan temples
were destroyed by Christian mob. Pagan priests were killed.

*Between 315 and 6th century thousands of pagan believers were slain.

*Examples of destroyed Temples the Sanctuary of Aesculap in Aegaea,
the Temple of Aphrodite in Golgatha, Aphaka in Lebanon, the
Heliopolis.

*Christian priests such as Mark of Arethusa or Cyrill of Heliopolis
were famous as "temple destroyer." [DA468] *Pagan services became
punishable by death in 356. [DA468]

*Christian Emperor Theodosius (408-450) even had children executed,
because they had been playing with remains of pagan statues. [DA469]

According to Christian chroniclers he "followed meticulously all
Christian teachings..."

*In 6th century pagans were declared void of all rights.

*In the early fourth century the philosopher Sopatros was executed on
demand of Christian authorities. [DA466]

*The world famous female philosopher Hypatia of Alexandria was torn to
pieces with glass fragments by a hysterical Christian mob led by a
Christian minister named Peter, in a church, in 415.

Mission

*Emperor Karl (Charlemagne) in 782 had 4500 Saxons, unwilling to
convert to Christianity, beheaded. [DO30]

*Peasants of Steding (Germany) unwilling to pay suffocating church
taxes between 5,000 and 11,000 men, women and children slain
5/27/1234 near Altenesch/Germany. [WW223]

*Battle of Belgrad 1456 80,000 Turks slaughtered. [DO235]

*15th century Poland 1019 churches and 17987 villages plundered by
Knights of the Order. Victims unknown. [DO30]

*16th and 17th century Ireland. English troops "pacified and
civilized" Ireland, where only Gaelic "wild Irish", "unreasonable
beasts lived without any knowledge of God or good manners, in common
of their goods, cattle, women, children and every other thing." One of
the more successful soldiers, a certain Humphrey Gilbert, half-brother
of Sir Walter Raleigh, ordered that "the heddes of all those (of what
sort soever thei were) which were killed in the daie, should be cutte
off from their bodies... and should bee laied on the ground by eche
side of the waie", which effort to civilize the Irish indeed caused
"greate terrour to the people when thei sawe the heddes of their dedde
fathers, brothers, children, kinsfolke, and freinds on the grounde".

Tens of thousands of Gaelic Irish fell victim to the carnage. [SH99,
225]

Crusades (1095-1291)

*First Crusade 1095 on command of pope Urban II. [WW11-41]

*Semlin/Hungary 6/24/96 thousands slain. Wieselburg/Hungary 6/12/96
thousands. [WW23] *9/9/96-9/26/96 Nikaia, Xerigordon (then turkish),
thousands respectively. [WW25-27]

*Until Jan 1098 a total of 40 capital cities and 200 castles conquered
(number of slain unknown) [WW30]

*After 6/3/98 Antiochia (then turkish) conquered, between 10,000 and
60,000 slain. 6/28/98 100,000 Turks (incl. women & children) killed.

Here the Christians "did no other harm to the women found in [the
enemy's] tents - save that they ran their lances through their
bellies," according to Christian chronicler Fulcher of Chartres.

*Marra (Maraat an-numan) 12/11/98 thousands killed. Because of the
subsequent famine "the already stinking corpses of the enemies were
eaten by the Christians" said chronicler Albert Aquensis. [WW36]

*Jerusalem conquered 7/15/1099 more than 60,000 victims (jewish,
muslim, men, women, children). [WW37-40]

(In the words of one witness "there [in front of Solomon's temple]
was such a carnage that our people were wading ankle-deep in the blood
of our foes", and after that "happily and crying for joy our people
marched to our Saviour's tomb, to honour it and to pay off our debt of
gratitude")

*The Archbishop of Tyre, eye-witness, wrote "It was impossible to
look upon the vast numbers of the slain without horror; everywhere lay
fragments of human bodies, and the very ground was covered with the
blood of the slain. It was not alone the spectacle of headless bodies
and mutilated limbs strewn in all directions that roused the horror of
all who looked upon them. Still more dreadful was it to gaze upon the
victors themselves, dripping with blood from head to foot, an ominous
sight which brought terror to all who met them. It is reported that
within the Temple enclosure alone about ten thousand infidels

*Christian chronicler Eckehard of Aura noted that "even the following
summer in all of palestine the air was polluted by the stench of
decomposition". One million victims of the first crusade alone. [WW41]

*Battle of Askalon, 8/12/1099. 200,000 heathens slaughtered "in the
name of Our Lord Jesus Christ". [WW45]

*Fourth crusade 4/12/1204 Constantinople sacked, number of victims
unknown, numerous thousands, many of them Christian. [WW141-148]

*Rest of Crusades in less detail until the fall of Akkon 1291
probably 20 million victims (in the Holy land and Arab/Turkish areas

Heretics

*Already in 385 C.E. the first Christians, the Spanish Priscillianus
and six followers, were beheaded for heresy in Trier/Germany [DO26]

*Manichaean heresy a crypto-Christian sect decent enough to practice
birth control (and thus not as irresponsible as faithful Catholics)
was exterminated in huge campaigns all over the Roman empire between
372 C.E. and 444 C.E. Numerous thousands of victims. [NC]

*Albigensians the first Crusade intended to slay other Christians.

The Albigensians (cathars = Christians allegedly that have all rarely
sucked) viewed themselves as good Christians, but would not accept
roman Catholic rule, and taxes, and prohibition of birth control. [NC]

Begin of violence on command of pope Innocent III (greatest single
pre-nazi mass murderer) in 1209. Beziérs (today France) 7/22/1209
destroyed, all the inhabitants were slaughtered. Victims (including
Catholics refusing to turn over their heretic neighbours and friends)
20,000-70,000. [WW179-181]

*Carcassonne 8/15/1209, thousands slain. Other cities followed.

*subsequent 20 years of war until nearly all Cathars (probably half
the population of the Languedoc, today southern France) were
exterminated. [WW183]

*After the war ended (1229) the Inquisition was founded 1232 to search
and destroy surviving/hiding heretics. Last Cathars burned at the
stake 1324. [WW183] *Estimated one million victims (cathar heresy
alone), [WW183]

*Other heresies Waldensians, Paulikians, Runcarians, Josephites, and
many others. Most of these sects exterminated, (I believe some
Waldensians live today, yet they had to endure 600 years of
persecution) I estimate at least hundred thousand victims (including
the Spanish inquisition but excluding victims in the New World).

*Spanish Inquisitor Torquemada alone allegedly responsible for 10,220
burnings. [DO28]

*John Huss, a critic of papal infallibility and indulgences, was
burned at the stake in 1415. [LI475-522]

*University professor B.Hubmaier burned at the stake 1538 in Vienna.
[DO59]

*Giordano Bruno, Dominican monk, after having been incarcerated for
seven years, was burned at the stake for heresy on the Campo dei Fiori
(Rome) on 2/17/1600.

Witches

*from the beginning of Christianity to 1484 probably more than several
thousand.

*in the era of witch hunting (1484-1750) according to modern scholars
several hundred thousand (about 80% female) burned at the stake or

Religious Wars

*15th century Crusades against Hussites, thousands slain. [DO30]

*1538 pope Paul III declared Crusade against apostate England and all
English as slaves of Church (fortunately had not power to go into
action). [DO31]

*1568 Spanish Inquisition Tribunal ordered extermination of 3 million
rebels in (then Spanish) Netherlands. Thousands were actually slain.
[DO31]

*1572 In France about 20,000 Huguenots were killed on command of pope
Pius V. Until 17th century 200,000 flee. [DO31]

*17th century Catholics slay Gaspard de Coligny, a Protestant leader.
After murdering him, the Catholic mob mutilated his body, "cutting off
his head, his hands, and his genitals... and then dumped him into the
river [...but] then, deciding that it was not worthy of being food for
the fish, they hauled it out again [... and] dragged what was left ...
to the gallows of Montfaulcon, 'to be meat and carrion for maggots and
crows'." [SH191]

*17th century Catholics sack the city of Magdeburg/Germany roughly
30,000 Protestants were slain. "In a single church fifty women were
found beheaded," reported poet Friedrich Schiller, "and infants still
sucking the breasts of their lifeless mothers." [SH191]

*17th century 30 years' war (Catholic vs. Protestant) at least 40% of
population decimated, mostly in Germany. [DO31-32]

Jews

*Already in the 4th and 5th centuries synagogues were burned by
Christians. Number of Jews slain unknown.

*In the middle of the fourth century the first synagogue was destroyed
on command of bishop Innocentius of Dertona in Northern Italy. The
first synagogue known to have been burned down was near the river
Euphrat, on command of the bishop of Kallinikon in the year 388.

*17. Council of Toledo 694 Jews were enslaved, their property
confiscated, and their children forcibly baptized. [DA454]

*The Bishop of Limoges (France) in 1010 had the cities' Jews, who
would not convert to Christianity, expelled or killed. [DA453]

*First Crusade Thousands of Jews slaughtered 1096, maybe 12.000
total. Places Worms 5/18/1096, Mainz 5/27/1096 (1100 persons),
Cologne, Neuss, Altenahr, Wevelinghoven, Xanten, Moers, Dortmund,
Kerpen, Trier, Metz, Regensburg, Prag and others (All locations
Germany except Metz/France, Prag/Czech) [EJ]

*Second Crusade 1147. Several hundred Jews were slain in Ham, Sully,
Carentan, and Rameru (all locations in France). [WW57]

*Third Crusade English Jewish communities sacked 1189/90. [DO40]
*Fulda/Germany 1235 34 Jewish men and women slain. [DO41]

*1257, 1267 Jewish communities of London, Canterbury, Northampton,
Lincoln, Cambridge, and others exterminated. [DO41]

*1290 in Bohemian (Poland) allegedly 10,000 Jews killed. [DO41]

*1337 Starting in Deggendorf/Germany a Jew-killing craze reaches 51
towns in Bavaria, Austria, Poland. [DO41]

*1348 All Jews of Basel/Switzerland and Strasbourg/France (two
thousand) burned. [DO41]

*1349 In more than 350 towns in Germany all Jews murdered, mostly
burned alive (in this one year more Jews were killed than Christians
in 200 years of ancient Roman persecution of Christians). [DO42]

*1389 In Prag 3,000 Jews were slaughtered. [DO42]

*1391 Seville's Jews killed (Archbishop Martinez leading). 4,000 were
slain, 25,000 sold as slaves. [DA454] Their identification was made
easy by the brightly colored "badges of shame" that all jews above the
age of ten had been forced to wear.

*1492 In the year Columbus set sail to conquer a New World, more than
150,000 Jews were expelled from Spain, many died on their way
6/30/1492. [MM470-476]

*1648 Chmielnitzki massacres In Poland about 200,000 Jews were slain.
[DO43]

(I feel sick ...) this goes on and on, century after century, right
into the kilns of Auschwitz.

Native Peoples

*Beginning with Columbus (a former slave trader and would-be Holy
Crusader) the conquest of the New World began, as usual understood as
a means to propagate Christianity.

*Within hours of landfall on the first inhabited island he encountered
in the Caribbean, Columbus seized and carried off six native people
who, he said, "ought to be good servants ... [and] would easily be
made Christians, because it seemed to me that they belonged to no
religion." [SH200]

While Columbus described the Indians as "idolators" and "slaves, as
many as [the Crown] shall order," his pal Michele de Cuneo, Italian
nobleman, referred to the natives as "beasts" because "they eat when
they are hungry," and made love "openly whenever they feel like it."
[SH204-205]

*On every island he set foot on, Columbus planted a cross, "making the
declarations that are required" - the requerimiento - to claim the
ownership for his Catholic patrons in Spain. And "nobody objected." If
the Indians refused or delayed their acceptance (or understanding),
the requerimiento continued

"I certify to you that, with the help of God, we shall powerfully
enter in your country and shall make war against you ... and shall
subject you to the yoke and obedience of the Church ... and shall do
you all mischief that we can, as to vassals who do not obey and refuse
to receive their lord and resist and contradict him." [SH66]

*Likewise in the words of John Winthrop, first governor of
Massachusetts Bay Colony "justifieinge the undertakeres of the
intended Plantation in New England ... to carry the Gospell into those
parts of the world, ... and to raise a Bulworke against the kingdome
of the Ante-Christ." [SH235]

*In average two thirds of the native population were killed by
colonist-imported smallpox before violence began. This was a great
sign of "the marvelous goodness and providence of God" to the
Christians of course, e.g. the Governor of the Massachusetts Bay
Colony wrote in 1634, as "for the natives, they are near all dead of
the smallpox, so as the Lord hath cleared our title to what we
possess." [SH109,238]

*On Hispaniola alone, on Columbus visits, the native population
(Arawak), a rather harmless and happy people living on an island of
abundant natural resources, a literal paradise, soon mourned 50,000
dead. [SH204]

*The surviving Indians fell victim to rape, murder, enslavement and
spanish raids.

*As one of the culprits wrote "So many Indians died that they could
not be counted, all through the land the Indians lay dead everywhere.
The stench was very great and pestiferous." [SH69]

*The indian chief Hatuey fled with his people but was captured and
burned alive. As "they were tying him to the stake a Franciscan friar
urged him to take Jesus to his heart so that his soul might go to
heaven, rather than descend into hell. Hatuey replied that if heaven
was where the Christians went, he would rather go to hell." [SH70]

*What happened to his people was described by an eyewitness

"The Spaniards found pleasure in inventing all kinds of odd cruelties
... They built a long gibbet, long enough for the toes to touch the
ground to prevent strangling, and hanged thirteen [natives] at a time
in honor of Christ Our Saviour and the twelve Apostles... then, straw
was wrapped around their torn bodies and they were burned alive."
[SH72]

Or, on another occasion

"The Spaniards cut off the arm of one, the leg or hip of another, and
from some their heads at one stroke, like butchers cutting up beef and
mutton for market. Six hundred, including the cacique, were thus slain
like brute beasts...Vasco [de Balboa] ordered forty of them to be torn
to pieces by dogs." [SH83]

*The "island's population of about eight million people at the time of
Columbus's arrival in 1492 already had declined by a third to a half
before the year 1496 was out." Eventually all the island's natives
were exterminated, so the Spaniards were "forced" to import slaves
from other caribbean islands, who soon suffered the same fate. Thus
"the Caribbean's millions of native people [were] thereby effectively
liquidated in barely a quarter of a century". [SH72-73] "In less than
the normal lifetime of a single human being, an entire culture of
millions of people, thousands of years resident in their homeland, had
been exterminated." [SH75]

*"And then the Spanish turned their attention to the mainland of
Mexico and Central America. The slaughter had barely begun. The
exquisite city of Tenochtitlán [Mexico city] was next." [SH75]

*Cortez, Pizarro, De Soto and hundreds of other spanish conquistadors
likewise sacked southern and mesoamerican civilizations in the name of
Christ (De Soto also sacked Florida). *"When the 16th century ended,
some 200,000 Spaniards had moved to the Americas. By that time
probably more than 60,000,000 natives were dead." [SH95]

Of course no different were the founders of what today is the US of
America.

*Although none of the settlers would have survived winter without
native help, they soon set out to expel and exterminate the Indians.
Warfare among (north American) Indians was rather harmless, in
comparison to European standards, and was meant to avenge insults
rather than conquer land. In the words of some of the pilgrim fathers
"Their Warres are farre less bloudy...", so that there usually was "no
great slawter of nether side". Indeed, "they might fight seven yeares
and not kill seven men." What is more, the Indians usually spared
women and children. [SH111]

*In the spring of 1612 some English colonists found life among the
(generally friendly and generous) natives attractive enough to leave
Jamestown - "being idell ... did runne away unto the Indyans," - to
live among them (that probably solved a sex problem).

"Governor Thomas Dale had them hunted down and executed 'Some he
apointed (sic) to be hanged Some burned Some to be broken upon wheles,
others to be staked and some shott to deathe'." [SH105] Of course
these elegant measures were restricted for fellow englishmen "This
was the treatment for those who wished to act like Indians. For those
who had no choice in the matter, because they were the native people
of Virginia" methods were different "when an Indian was accused by an
Englishman of stealing a cup and failing to return it, the English
response was to attack the natives in force, burning the entire
community" down. [SH105]

*On the territory that is now Massachusetts the founding fathers of
the colonies were committing genocide, in what has become known as the
"Peqout War". The killers were New England Puritan Christians,
refugees from persecution in their own home country England.

*When however, a dead colonist was found, apparently killed by
Narragansett Indians, the Puritan colonists wanted revenge. Despite
the Indian chief's pledge they attacked.

Somehow they seem to have lost the idea of what they were after,
because when they were greeted by Pequot Indians (long-time foes of
the Narragansetts) the troops nevertheless made war on the Pequots and
burned their villages.

The puritan commander-in-charge John Mason after one massacre wrote
"And indeed such a dreadful Terror did the Almighty let fall upon
their Spirits, that they would fly from us and run into the very
Flames, where many of them perished ... God was above them, who
laughed his Enemies and the Enemies of his People to Scorn, making
them as a fiery Oven ... Thus did the Lord judge among the Heathen,
filling the Place with dead Bodies" men, women, children. [SH113-114]
*So "the Lord was pleased to smite our Enemies in the hinder Parts,
and to give us their land for an inheritance". [SH111].

*Because of his readers' assumed knowledge of Deuteronomy, there was
no need for Mason to quote the words that immediately follow

"Thou shalt save alive nothing that breatheth. But thou shalt utterly
destroy them..." (Deut 20)

*Mason's comrade Underhill recalled how "great and doleful was the
bloody sight to the view of the young soldiers" yet reassured his
readers that "sometimes the Scripture declareth women and children
must perish with their parents". [SH114]

*Other Indians were killed in successful plots of poisoning. The
colonists even had dogs especially trained to kill Indians and to
devour children from their mothers breasts, in the colonists' own
words "blood Hounds to draw after them, and Mastives to seaze them."
(This was inspired by spanish methods of the time)

In this way they continued until the extermination of the Pequots was
near. [SH107-119]

*The surviving handful of Indians "were parceled out to live in
servitude. John Endicott and his pastor wrote to the governor asking
for 'a share' of the captives, specifically 'a young woman or girle
and a boy if you thinke good'." [SH115]

*Other tribes were to follow the same path.

*Comment the Christian exterminators "God's Will, which will at last
give us cause to say How Great is His Goodness! and How Great is his
Beauty!"

"Thus doth the Lord Jesus make them to bow before him, and to lick the
Dust!" [TA]

*Like today, lying was OK to Christians then. "Peace treaties were
signed with every intention to violate them when the Indians 'grow
secure uppon (sic) the treatie', advised the Council of State in
Virginia, 'we shall have the better Advantage both to surprise them, &
cutt downe theire Corne'." [SH106]

*In 1624 sixty heavily armed Englishmen cut down 800 defenseless
Indian men, women and children. [SH107]

*In a single massacre in "King Philip's War" of 1675 and 1676 some
"600 Indians were destroyed. A delighted Cotton Mather, revered pastor
of the Second Church in Boston, later referred to the slaughter as a
'barbeque'." [SH115]

*To summarize Before the arrival of the English, the western Abenaki
people in New Hampshire and Vermont had numbered 12,000. Less than
half a century later about 250 remained alive - a destruction rate of
98%. The Pocumtuck people had numbered more than 18,000, fifty years
later they were down to 920 - 95% destroyed. The Quiripi-Unquachog
people had numbered about 30,000, fifty years later they were down to
1500 - 95% destroyed. The Massachusetts people had numbered at least
44,000, fifty years later barely 6000 were alive - 81% destroyed.
[SH118] These are only a few examples of the multitude of tribes
living before Christian colonists set their foot on the New World. All
this was before the smallpox epidemics of 1677 and 1678 had occurred.
And the carnage was not over then.

*All the above was only the beginning of the European colonization, it
was before the frontier age actually had begun.

*A total of maybe more than 150 million Indians (of both Americas)
were destroyed in the period of 1500 to 1900, as an average two thirds
by smallpox and other epidemics, that leaves some 50 million killed
directly by violence, bad treatment and slavery.

*In many countries, such as Brazil, and Guatemala, this continues even
today.

More Notable Events in US history

*Reverend Solomon Stoddard, one of New England's most esteemed
religious leaders, in "1703 formally proposed to the Massachusetts
Governor that the colonists be given the financial wherewithal to
purchase and train large packs of dogs 'to hunt Indians as they do
bears'." [SH241]

*Massacre of Sand Creek, Colorado 11/29/1864. Colonel John Chivington,
a former Methodist minister and still elder in the church ("I long to
be wading in gore") had a Cheyenne village of about 600, mostly women
and children, gunned down despite the chiefs' waving with a white
flag 400-500 killed.

From an eye-witness account "There were some thirty or forty squaws
collected in a hole for protection; they sent out a little girl about
six years old with a white flag on a stick; she had not proceeded but
a few steps when she was shot and killed. All the squaws in that hole
were afterwards killed ..." [SH131]

*By the 1860s, "in Hawai'i the Reverend Rufus Anderson surveyed the
carnage that by then had reduced those islands' native population by
90 percent or more, and he declined to see it as tragedy; the expected
total die-off of the Hawaiian population was only natural, this
missionary said, somewhat equivalent to 'the amputation of diseased
members of the body'." [SH244]

20th Century Church Atrocities

*Catholic extermination camps

Surpisingly few know that Nazi extermination camps in World War II
were by no means the only ones in Europe at the time. In the years
1942-1943 also in Croatia existed numerous extermination camps, run by
Catholic Ustasha under their dictator Ante Paveliç, a practising
Catholic and regular visitor to the then pope. There were even
concentration camps exclusively for children!

In these camps - the most notorious was Jasenovac, headed by a
Franciscan friar - orthodox-Christian serbians (and a substantial
number of Jews) were murdered. Like the Nazis the Catholic Ustasha
burned their victims in kilns, alive (the Nazis were decent enough to
have their victims gassed first). But most of the victims were simply
stabbed, slain or shot to death, the number of them being estimated
between 300,000 and 600,000, in a rather tiny country. Many of the
killers were Franciscan friars. The atrocities were appalling enough
to induce bystanders of the Nazi "Sicherheitsdient der SS", watching,
to complain about them to Hitler (who did not listen). The pope knew
about these events and did nothing to prevent them. [MV]

*Catholic terror in Vietnam

In 1954 Vietnamese freedom fighters - the Viet Minh - had finally
defeated the French colonial government in North Vietnam, which by
then had been supported by U.S. funds amounting to more than $2
billion. Although the victorious assured religious freedom to all
(most non-buddhist Vietnamese were Catholics), due to huge
anticommunist propaganda campaigns many Catholics fled to the South.
With the help of Catholic lobbies in Washington and Cardinal Spellman,
the Vatican's spokesman in U.S. politics, who later on would call the
U.S. forces in Vietnam "Soldiers of Christ", a scheme was concocted to
prevent democratic elections which could have brought the communist
Viet Minh to power in the South as well, and the fanatic Catholic Ngo
Dinh Diem was made president of South Vietnam. [MW16ff]

Diem saw to it that U.S. aid, food, technical and general assistance
was given to Catholics alone, Buddhist individuals and villages were
ignored or had to pay for the food aids which were given to Catholics
for free. The only religious denomination to be supported was Roman
Catholicism.

The Vietnamese McCarthyism turned even more vicious than its American
counterpart. By 1956 Diem promulgated a presidential order which read

"Individuals considered dangerous to the national defense and common
security may be confined by executive order, to a concentration camp."

Supposedly to fight communism, thousands of buddhist protesters and
monks were imprisoned in "detention camps." Out of protest dozens of
buddhist teachers - male and female - and monks poured gasoline over
themselves and burned themselves. (Note that Buddhists burned
themselves in comparison Christians tend to burn others). Meanwhile
some of the prison camps, which in the meantime were filled with
Protestant and even Catholic protesters as well, had turned into
no-nonsense death camps. It is estimated that during this period of
terror (1955-1960) at least 24,000 were wounded - mostly in street
riots - 80,000 people were executed, 275,000 had been detained or
tortured, and about 500,000 were sent to concentration or detention
camps. [MW76-89].

To support this kind of government in the next decade thousands of
American GI's lost their life.

*Christianity kills the cat

On July 1, 1976, Anneliese Michel, a 23-year-old student of a teachers
college in Germany, died she starved herself to death. For months she
had been haunted by demonic visions and apparitions, and for months
two Catholic priests - with explicit approval of the Catholic bishop
of Würzburg - additionally pestered and tormented the wretched girl
with their exorcist rituals. After her death in Klingenberg hospital -
her body was littered with wounds - her parents, both of them
fanatical Catholics, were sentenced to six months for not having
called for medical help. None of the priests was punished on the
contrary, Miss Michel's grave today is a place of pilgrimage and
worship for a number of similarly faithful Catholics (in the
seventeenth century Würzburg was notorious for it's extensive witch
burnings).

This case is only the tip of an iceberg of such evil superstition and
has become known only because of its lethal outcome. [SP80]

*Rwanda Massacres

In 1994 in the small african country of Rwanda in just a few months
several hundred thousand civilians were butchered, apparently a
conflict of the Hutu and Tutsi ethnic groups.

For quite some time I heard only rumours about Catholic clergy
actively involved in the 1994 Rwanda massacres. Odd denials of
involvement were printed in Catholic church journals, before even
anybody had openly accused members of the church.

Then, 10/10/96, in the newscast of S2 Aktuell, Germany - a station not
at all critical to Christianity - the following was stated

"Anglican as well as Catholic priests and nuns are suspect of having
actively participated in murders. Especially the conduct of a certain
Catholic priest has been occupying the public mind in Rwanda's capital
Kigali for months. He was minister of the church of the Holy Family
and allegedly murdered Tutsis in the most brutal manner. He is
reported to have accompanied marauding Hutu militia with a gun in his
cowl. In fact there has been a bloody slaughter of Tutsis seeking
shelter in his parish. Even two years after the massacres many
Catholics refuse to set foot on the threshold of their church, because
to them the participation of a certain part of the clergy in the
slaughter is well established. There is almost no church in Rwanda
that has not seen refugees - women, children, old - being brutally
butchered facing the crucifix.

According to eyewitnesses clergymen gave away hiding Tutsis and turned
them over to the machetes of the Hutu militia.

In connection with these events again and again two Benedictine nuns
are mentioned, both of whom have fled into a Belgian monastery in the
meantime to avoid prosecution. According to survivors one of them
called the Hutu killers and led them to several thousand people who
had sought shelter in her monastery. By force the doomed were driven
out of the churchyard and were murdered in the presence of the nun
right in front of the gate. The other one is also reported to have
directly cooperated with the murderers of the Hutu militia. In her
case again witnesses report that she watched the slaughtering of
people in cold blood and without showing response. She is even accused
of having procured some petrol used by the killers to set on fire and
burn their victims alive..." [S2]

*As can be seen from these events, to Christianity the Dark Ages never
come to an end.

20th Century Terrorism by Christians opposed to doctors

Murders

In the U.S., violence directed toward abortion providers has killed 7 people, including 3 doctors, 2 clinic employees, a security guard, and a clinic escort.[5]

* March 10, 1993: Dr. David Gunn of Pensacola, Florida was fatally shot during a protest. He had been the subject of wanted-style posters distributed by Operation Rescue in the summer of the year before. Michael F. Griffin was found guilty of Dr. Gunn's murder and was sentenced to life in prison.

* June 29, 1994: Dr. John Britton and James Barrett, a clinic escort, were both shot to death outside of another facility in Pensacola. Rev. Paul Jennings Hill was charged with the killings, received a death sentence, and was executed September 3, 2003.

* December 30, 1994: Two receptionists, Shannon Lowney and Lee Ann Nichols, were killed in two clinic attacks in Brookline, Massachusetts. John Salvi, who prior to his arrest was distributing pamphlets from Human Life International,[6] was arrested and confessed to the killings. He committed suicide in prison and guards found his body under his bed with a plastic garbage bag tied around his head. Salvi had also confessed to a non-lethal attack in Norfolk, Virginia days before the Brookline killings.

* January 29, 1998: Robert Sanderson, an off-duty police officer who worked as a security guard at an abortion clinic in Birmingham, Alabama, was killed when his workplace was bombed. Eric Robert Rudolph, who was also responsible for the 1996 Centennial Olympic Park bombing, was charged with the crime and received two life sentences as a result.

* October 23, 1998: Dr. Barnett Slepian was shot to death at his home in Amherst, New York. His was the last in a series of similar shootings against providers in Canada and northern New York state which were all likely committed by James Kopp. Kopp was convicted of Dr. Slepian's murder after finally being apprehended in France in 2001.

Attempted murder, assault, and threats

According to statistics gathered by the National Abortion Federation (NAF), an organization of abortion providers, since 1977 in the United States and Canada, there have been 17 attempted murders, 383 death threats, 153 incidents of assault or battery, and 3 kidnappings committed against abortion providers.[8] The attempted murders were:[9][10][5]

* August 19, 1993: Dr. George Tiller was shot outside of an abortion facility in Wichita, Kansas. Shelley Shannon was charged with the crime and received an 11-year prison sentence.

* June 29, 1994: June Barret was shot in the same attack which claimed the lives of James Barrett, her husband, and Dr. John Britton.

* December 30, 1994: Five individuals were wounded in the same-day shootings which killed Shannon Lowney and Lee Ann Nichols.

* December 18, 1996: Dr. Calvin Jackson of New Orleans, Louisiana was stabbed 15 times, losing 4 pints of blood. Donald Cooper was charged with second-degree attempted murder and sentenced to 20 years.[11]

* October 28, 1997: A physician whose name has not been revealed was shot in his home in Rochester, New York.

* January 29, 1998: Emily Lyons, a nurse, was severely injured in the bombing which also killed Robert Sanderson.

* September 11, 2006 David McMenemy attempted a suicide bombing of a women's clinic in Davenport, Iowa after scouting targets throughout the Midwest. It was later revealed that the targeted clinic did not perform or make referrals for abortions.

Arson, bombing, and property crimes

According to NAF, since 1977 in the United States and Canada, property crimes committed against abortion providers have included 41 bombings, 173 arsons, 91 attempted bombings or arsons, 619 bomb threats, 1630 incidents of trespassing, 1264 incidents of vandalism, and 100 attacks with butyric acid ("stink bombs").[8] The first clinic arson occurred in Oregon in March 1976 and the first bombing occurred in February 1978 in Ohio.[13] More recent incidents have included:[5]

* October 1999: Martin Uphoff set fire to a Planned Parenthood clinic in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, causing US$100 worth of damage. He was later sentenced to 60 months in prison.

* May 28, 2000: An arson at a clinic in Concord, New Hampshire on resulted in damage estimated at US$20,000.

* October 1, 2000: A Catholic priest drove his car into the Northern Illinois Health Clinic after learning that the FDA had approved the drug RU-486. He pulled out an ax before being shot at by a security guard.

* June 11, 2001: A bombing at a clinic in Tacoma, Washington on destroyed a wall, resulting in US$6000 in damages

* July 4, 2005: A clinic Palm Beach, Florida was the target of an arson.

* December 12, 2005: Patricia Hughes and Jeremy Dunahoe threw a Molotov cocktail at a clinic in Shreveport, Louisiana. The device missed the building and no damage was caused. In August 2006, Hughes was sentenced to six years in prison, and Dunahoe to one year.

* September 13, 2006 David McMenemy of Rochester Hills, Michigan crashed his car into the Edgerton Women's Care Center in Davenport, Iowa. He then doused the lobby in gasoline and then started a fire. McMenemy committed these acts in the belief that the center was performing abortions, however Edgerton is not an abortion clinc.[14]

* April 25, 2007: A package left at a women's health clinic in Austin, Texas contained an explosive device capable of inflicting serious injury or death. A bomb squad detonated the device.[15]

* May 9, 2007: An unidentified person deliberately set fire to a Planned Parenthood clinic in Virginia Beach, Virginia.[16]

* December 6, 2007: Two unidentified persons set fire to a Planned Parenthood clinic in Albuquerque, New Mexico.[17]

How killing of goats for meat is different from killing of stray dogs ?

Stray dogs are not found in developed countries like USA ; even we shouldn't have domestic cows and buffaloes roaming around close to highways, thereby increasing the probability of causing accidents.

I would rather thank the people who are catching the stray dogs for livelihood as their presence is not safe for the kids. Ask those who had to bear the pain of 14 rabies injection.

Hinduism says to show mercy to animals but we beat up all kinds of snakes without hesitation, except COBRA. Hindus started enjoying meat eating too.

Development process is based on human need and is irreversible. Activists and communists still believe that traditional agriculture is enough for arranging food for 1 billion plus Indians. The truth is , if LPG Gas and electricity were not there, the dependence on wood for cooking food, would have destroyed all the trees and we would be facing a very very hot summer season; also the crop production would have suffered.

How do we produce LPG ? Electricity ?

Don't we need land for setting up refineries and Hydro-Electric Dam projects or coal based Thermal projects ?

Don't we need iron, steel and cement for building Homes and Industrial infrastructure ? Well , activists would say No because they still believe that people can live in clay huts.

Even we may have to depend on Genetically modified Brinjals and other vegetables to increase the crop production. Activists of course would say a straight no.

It is time to look forward and move on.

This is the starkest manifestation of Adivasi deprivation in India ? an average Indian child has a 25 percent lower likelihood of dying under the age of five compared to an Adivasi child. In rural areas, where the majority of Adivasi children live, they made up about 11 percent of all births but 23 percent of all deaths in the five years preceding the National Family Heath Survey 2005. While there has been progress in child survival over the years and greater awareness of the hazards, which often leads to these stories surfacing in the media at all, the fact remains that children in tribal areas are at much greater risk of dying than those in other areas.

The rich and longstanding demographic and medical literature on child mortality can broadly be classified into three groups ? the first focuses on "routes to low mortality" and aggregate declines in mortality through cross-country studies (for instance, Caldwell 1986; Claeson et al, 2000); the second on the determinants of child mortality (for instance see Mosley and Chen 1984); and the third on inequalities in child mortality across countries, within countries and across households (for instance see Hill and Pebly 1989; Cesar et al, 2003). Differential fertility and mortality patterns within India by caste and tribal status have received greater attention over the last few decades (see Murthi et al, 1996; Dyson and Moore, 1993; Dreze and Gazdar, 1997; Maharatna, 1998; 2000). The preoccupation of such studies on child mortality has however been on correlates of mortality and the slow decline in child mortality in recent years. There is a good reason for this as India looks likely to falter on achieving this important Millennium Development Goal ? a fear expressed in 2000 by Claeson et al.

The anthropological literature has also focused on access to health for India's Adivasis. Excess mortality of tribal children during monsoons in particular has been analyzed by activists more recently through a food security lens. The Right to Food movement and the recent Supreme Court judgments exhort governments to take more aggressive action to address malnutrition nationally but more so in tribal areas. The evidence from the grassroots highlights the peculiar problems in tribal areas because of which poverty is higher, and health and education outcomes are lower. There is for instance, wide acknowledgment that excess mortality in childhood for tribals is partly due to poverty and partly to poor access to services. Our own previous analysis of mortality using data from India's Reproductive and Child Health Surveys, 2005 (see World Bank, 2006) and a recent study on Orissa also shows that once poverty levels are controlled for, the effect of tribal (or indeed Dalit or Scheduled Caste (SC)) status goes away. By and large, therefore, much of the analytical work on Scheduled Tribes (STs) in India has confirmed what we already know about child mortality and its correlates. This paper is an attempt to drill deeper into that knowledge to come up with some disaggregated patterns that more fully describe and explain the high levels of mortality of tribal children.

The analysis undertaken for this paper is part of an ongoing program 3 that looks at social exclusion and the differential outcomes for excluded groups like Dalit and Adivasis along a range of development parameters. The characteristics of Scheduled Tribes and Scheduled Castes and manner in which exclusion manifests itself is discussed in greater detail in the reports from that program. In this paper we disaggregate tribal child mortality patterns to build on the robust understanding that tribals do worse than others.

Tribal groups have historically had more equal gender relations and women's status in tribal societies has been higher. This has manifested itself in later than average age at marriage, higher participation of women in the labor force and lower restrictions on the mobility of women (see Das and Desai, 2003). Until the late 20th century, child mortality and fertility rates for tribals were lower than those for non-tribals (Maharatna, 1998). Dreze and Gazdar (1997) and Maharatna (1998; 2000) however point to a disturbing trend in tribal societies ? that gender equality and their lower fertility and mortality patterns seem to be gradually eroding, as they get more integrated into non-tribal society and as their traditionally sustainable livelihoods are encroached upon. Migration of tribals is also seen to be associated with wearing down their sustainable lifestyles (see for instance Maharatna on Santhal fertility, 2005). This is consistent with findings from other countries on the experience of indigenous populations. In their examination of health of Mexican immigrants in the USA, James (1993) and Vega and Amaro (1994) find a similar pattern of `acculturation' resulting in behaviors or lifestyles that adversely impact health (e.g. decreased fiber consumption, decreased breast feeding, increased use of

cigarettes and alcohol especially by young women).

Tribal groups however are very heterogeneous and there are large differences by state and even by districts within states, and certainly across tribes. The Government of India identifies 533 tribes with 62 of them located in the state of Orissa. 4 The national data do not allow for disaggregation by tribe, so some of these patterns may not hold true for individual tribes. There is an additional issue of heterogeneity. The most disadvantaged tribal groups are those where the Fifth Schedule of the Constitution applies. States in North-Eastern India, particularly those covered by the Sixth Schedule 5 have a large proportion of Scheduled Tribes but many also have much better human development indicators. Often the better indicators in these states raise average human development outcomes, so a state-wise disaggregation becomes really important.

The contribution of this paper lies in the fact that it disaggregates childhood mortality into neonatal, post-neonatal, infant and child mortality and analyzes the correlates of each. Most analyses have lumped child mortality6 into "under-five" mortality or have analyzed only infant

National Forum - Women's Reservation Bill- Reservation forDalit/OBC/Minority women- pl endorse

The "demand" for sub-quota, by no stretch, is a "demand". It's just an alibi. A pure and simple "alibi" to block women's reservation.
First of all, the SC and ST will automatically have their quota (of reservation) within (women's) quota. to ask for it is a mere act of deception.

There is no such reservation for OBCs or Muslims in state or central legislatures, so there will be none here either. Till some other amendments are made.

These selfsame worthies, it is pertinent to note, had no problem with women's reservation in Panchayats. Because these are too insignificant from their point of view.

Nor they are known to ever have raised any women's issues other than this.

This statement makes a point about Dalit reservation being implemented in Muslim majority areas. Why raise it in relation to the bill for women's reservation? And why does a what sounds like a mainly Muslim male group of upper or middle class professionals (never mind if some women are there too) speak on behalf of other minorities? Which other minority women or women's groups have they consulted? I ask because I have not heard of any such demand from any Christian women's groups for example. If you have, please do let me know.

I also have been hearing that the Kalinga Nagar area is kind of tense but apparently that is attributed to non-payment of R&R package before starting the construction work.

I want to believe the following reporting by Surya but since this is from a BBJM sympthasizer, I am wondering whether any   (cell phone) video or photos available to substantiate the charges labeled.

The CM of Odisha is a known Tata servant and sycophant and if he goes this far, that wouldn't surprise me. But, believing 'always-cry-wolf' activists without solid evidence is won't be a wise thing either.

I mean no offence to any activists.. ;please forgive my paranoidism.

On March 28,2010 the Bisthapan Birodhi Jan Manch leaders and villagers welcomed Jajpur District Collector and had a discussion with him on the controversial common corridor though they knew it very well the district administration had other motives. Many have been injured including women and children as indisciminate rubber bullet firing and lathi charge has taken place. They have entered the villages and unleashed a reign of terror. The villagers have tremendous patience and are still resisting peacefully. The area has become a war zone and more than a dozen people including women and children have been seriously injured.

This is being carried out under the supervision of IG Special Operations, Arun Sadangi. Despite Sec 144 being imposed in the area large number of Tata supporters, BJD cadre have assembled at the site and are giving instructions to the police. All people who have a conscience must act now as democracy in Kalinganagra is being butchered in the most vulgar manner and the political and bureaucratic leadership of the state have completely sold themselves to the Tatas. There has been absolutely not even a murmur of protest from any of the mainstream political party leaders which signifies the absolute power Tata wields over them. Just now reports reach us suggesting that firing has started in Baligootha village and where about of the leaders are not known.

National Forum - Sociological problems of urinating while female...

When I was in India earlier this year, the cities I visited in Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan had pissoirs – i.e. public urinals – for men every few blocks. You never want to stand downwind from a pissoir, but they serve their purpose well, especially in the teeming marketplaces of India. Men just step up, unzip, and let fly. Despite the fact that they were urinating in public, private parts were never, ever visible, and the crowds of people walking by paid absolutely no notice. When we were driving around, we often saw men casually peeing by the side of the road or against a conveniently placed wall or tree. It was no big deal.

Women on the other hand, practically speaking, we don't have a user-friendly spout that we can discreetly poke out of our clothes. No we have to unbutton, unzip, drop trou or pull up our skirts and wrangle our panties around (or wear none at all). Under the best of circumstances, it takes longer for us to do our business than men and under lousy circumstances, it can be a real ordeal (if you're stuck with an old-school squat toilet, you'd better have really strong quads, since sitting is impossible. Then there's the worst-case scenario, where you wind up in agony with no place to go. My sister, mother, and I spent more than one extremely uncomfortable afternoon in India with our teeth clenched, looking for a shop or restaurant that would let us use the facilities.

In places where the culture imposes strict standards of modesty onto women, there's obviously not going to be an equivalent of a public pissoir for them. My sister and I talked about this with our guide in Udaipur and he agreed–at first jokingly and then sincerely–that the bathroom double standard was entirely unfair to women. He explained: "The ladies don't leave home like the men do, so there's less need for them to have such places." That makes some sense–in societies with traditional gender roles, a woman's sphere is more limited, and if she has children, she's not likely to leave home for hours at a time. On the other hand, I saw a hell of a lot of women working for hours on end in the markets–in fact, most of the vegetable and fruit vendors in Udaipur were women–and I know they didn't have the same options as their pissoir-patronizing male counterparts. Maybe they had to hold it? I hope not.
